Self‑Employment & Tax Guide for Creators
A simple, easy overview of what you need to know when earning from adult content, escorting, or online platforms.
Registering as Self‑Employed
If you earn more than £1,000 a year, you’ll need to register as self‑employed with HMRC.
This includes:
• Getting your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)
• Keeping track of your income and expenses
• Filing your tax return by January 31st each year
How Your Income Is Taxed
You’re taxed on profit, not the total amount you receive.
Profit = Income – Allowable Expenses
Creators often earn from multiple sources, such as:
• Escort bookings
• Online platforms (OnlyFans, Fansly, etc.)
• Video Clip sales
• Camming
All income sources are combined and reported as one clear, easy-to-understand total.
Common Tax Mistakes to Avoid
You are required to register for VAT if:
• Your taxable turnover goes over £90,000
• You provide digital services
• Platform structures create VAT obligations
VAT can be confusing, especially with online platforms. Getting advice early can eliminate many common, costly mistakes
Other common issues include:
• Registering too late
• Not claiming all expenses
• Mixing personal and business finances
• Not preparing for Making Tax Digital
• Forgetting VAT thresholds
• Filing returns late
• Poor record‑keeping
These can lead to unnecessary penalties and stress, but they’re all avoidable with the right support.
